Challenges
and objectives
The objective that HKU set out was to migrate from SUSE Enterprise Storage (SES) to an open-source Ceph version with open source support.
Find another support solution
SUSE announced they would stop supporting Ceph. As SES was a service that HKU applied, they needed to find another support solution and seek advice based on support options.
Migrate current Ceph version
They also wanted to migrate their current Ceph version to one of the latest Ceph versions.
Move from SES support
HKU set out to move from their current SES support to 42on Emergency Assistance Ceph support.
Keep SUSE as underlying OS
They wanted to keep SUSE as the underlying OS in order to avoid creating more complexity.
No hick-ups or downtime
Because a lot of students rely on the Ceph backbone, the objective for HKU was to conduct this migration without any hick-ups or downtime in the environment.
